Shiloh

Part One

We started out with a plan for adventure and received way more than we had bargained for.

Our first stop was in the visitor center located on the battlefield of the Shiloh National Military Park. The rain was sprinkling a little as we made our way into the center to watch the interpretive film, Shiloh – Fiery Trial. The award winning film is about 49 minutes long and tells the story of the Battle of Shiloh. The battlefield is located in southwestern Tennessee. Over a two day period, from April 6th to April 7th in the year 1862, troops collided in one of the fiercest battles ever fought on American soil. Over 23,000 souls were lost as a result of this two day battle.

Colbert’s Stand

Sunday 10/27/2019

Exploring the Natchez Trace a little more this morning. The weather wasn’t cooperating but it stopped raining long enough for us to get out at Colbert’s Stand on the Tennessee River.

In the 1800’s ferry boats linked segments of the Natchez Trace to each other. George Colbert, a Native American leader of the Chickasaw people, ran a ferry across the river and operated an inn where travelers could find rest and a hot meal. Colbert once charged Andrew Jackson $75,000 to ferry his Tennessee army across the river.

(Let that sink in for a moment.)

Walk Away Witch

Walk away witch

Down your lonely path

Your magic fake

From the darkness you make

Promising potions and spells

Conjured up

From the depths of hell

How many souls

Have you stollen

Who can tell

Walk away witch

I’ve got no time

Or tolerance for you today

Go manipulate and tangle

Some other mind

Whom you wish to mangle

Gruene Hall

Gruene (Green) was once a significant cotton producing community along the Guadalupe River. Now it is part of New Braunfels, Texas and primarily a tourist attraction.

In 1845 Ernest Gruene, a German immigrant, and his two sons, purchased land and began building a community as they grew the number one cash crop for the area, cotton.

Gruene Hall became the center of the community’s social life and is the only business that survived the Great Depression and has never closed.

Samson and Delilah

I reread the story of Samson and Delilah this past week. Judges 13-16 KJV. It has always amazed me how Samson kept going back to Delilah after each attempt she made to help his enemies capture him. There are many lessons in the story but the one that stood out for me when I read it this time was:

“You can’t successfully fight your enemies during the day if you are sleeping with them at night.”

Prayer

Dear Lord,

As I begin this new week

help me to refuse any

invitations to argue, participate in drama, feel stress, or get tangled up in strife. Guide me in keeping the gate to my mind open and let all those invitations pass right on through without lingering. Allow Your wisdom and righteousness to enter in as I meditate on Your Word. Amen.

None of my exes live in Texas

True story:

This afternoon as I was checking out at a local store in Lago Vista, Texas the cashier exclaimed,

“I know you!”

I looked at her in bewilderment because I didn’t recall ever having seen her before.

She continued, “Didn’t your ex-husband used to work down the street at the Dollar General?”

I chuckled, “No, all of my

ex-husbands live in Florida and none of them ever worked at Dollar General.”

She laughed, “All! How many do you have?”

I replied, “Let’s just say my song would be titled:

🎶 None of my exes live in Texas 🎶

Then I gathered my bags and gestured goodbye as she chuckled to herself trying to guess the number that I refused to disclose.
